If the courses have unequal credits, the result changes. Imagine a 4-credit course with 4.0 grade points and a 2-credit course with 3.0 grade points. The quality points are 16 and 6, for a total of 22 across 6 credits. The GPA is 22 ÷ 6, or approximately 3.67. A simple average of 4.0 and 3.0 would produce 3.50 and would not reflect the different course weights.

Estimating a cumulative GPA

Assume a student has completed 30 credits at a cumulative GPA of 3.20. Existing quality points are 30 × 3.20 = 96. If the student completes 15 additional credits at an estimated 3.60, those courses contribute 54 quality points. The projected cumulative result is (96 + 54) ÷ 45, or approximately 3.33.

This example shows why a strong future semester may produce a gradual rather than dramatic change: earlier credits remain part of the average. The same method can test several scenarios, such as all Bs, a mix of As and Bs, or one lower grade in a high-credit course.
